Specialist Roger K. Hollinger Sr., deceased, is being
honoured tonight with the acceptance of his medallion by his son, Roger
Hollinger Jr. Specialist 4 Hollinger was born in Prattsville and served in the
US Army during the Vietnam War. His awards include two Silver Star Medals for
gallantry in action, the Bronze Star Medal for exceptionally meritorious combat
achievement, and the Army Commendation Medal for valor. Roger Hollinger
graduated from Central High School in Little Rock in 1967 and was inducted into
the United States Army on March 29, 1968.
Specialist 4 Hollinger distinguished himself through heroic
actions, receiving the Silver Star on May 29, 1969, and another on September 4,
1969. The narrative for his second Silver Star reads as follows: while serving
as a gunner with Company A, Second Battalion, 34th Armor in the Republic of
Vietnam, Company A encountered a large enemy force during a reconnaissance
operation. Specialist Hollinger immediately began to engage the hostile
positions with devastating fire. As the battle progressed, Specialist Hollinger's
main gun malfunctioned. Realizing that it could not be repaired quickly, he
secured an M16 rifle and continued to engage the enemy. When a comrade was
seriously wounded and pinned down, Specialist Hollinger exposed himself to
hostile fire to evacuate his fallen comrade to a safe location. His actions
contributed significantly to the success of the mission and the stopping of the
enemy force. Specialist Hollinger's bravery, aggressiveness, and dedication are
in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great
credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United
States Army.
