Colonel Billy Ray Wood was born in Ada, OK but has resided
in Mena, AR since 1998. His awards include the Legion of Merit Medal, the
Distinguished Flying Cross, the Army Soldier's Medal, the Bronze Star Medal for
exceptionally meritorious combat achievement, two Meritorious Service Medals,
twenty-two Air Medals, and three Army Commendation Medals. In 1967, Colonel
Wood received the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroic actions in the Republic
of Vietnam while serving on a helicopter in support of the 35th Infantry on
April 25, 1967. He made numerous trips into a heavily defended landing zone
through concentrated ground-to-air fire to deliver supplies and evacuate
wounded personnel. His effort, skill, and raw courage are credited for saving
at least two lives and an unknown number more if the badly needed supplies and
ammunition had not been delivered. His actions were in keeping with the highest
traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself.
Following his retirement after 28 years of superior service
to the United States, Colonel Wood returned to his beloved Arkansas and his
boyhood hometown of Mena. Billy Wood is a volunteer workforce whose involvement
in projects virtually guarantees success. The list of community organizations
and activities that enjoy Billy Wood's leadership and contributions is
extensive, including boards, commissions, and church councils. As an officer in
the local American Legion Post, he has spearheaded many projects and strongly
advocated for financial support of veterans' relief funds and National Guard
support. Whether it is helping to remodel the Veterans Service Office or
counseling a young veteran through a personal crisis, Billy Wood continues to
demonstrate his high regard and support for all veterans.
