Chester Lloyd Lee graduated from Poyen High School in May 1957. That fall he enrolled in Henderson State Teachers College in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. He graduated in May 1961 with a degree in Physical Education and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army's Military Police Corps. His first assignment was to the United States Disciplinary Barracks, Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. Chester completed two years on active duty before deciding he wanted to return to Arkansas and teach in the public schools. Please note, that he was awarded the Army Commendation medal for this period of service (Encl. 1). One year of teaching, he returned to active duty on 15 August 1964 and was again assigned to Ft. Leavenworth. He until Iserved as the Assistant Provost Marshall from 17 August1964 his departure for the Republic of Vietnam in July 1965. He was awarded the Army Commendation medal (First Oak Leaf Cluster) at the conclusion of his tour at Ft. Leavenworth. On23 August 1965, Chester arrived in Vietnam. He was assigned to the 716th Military Police Battalion in Saigon. Eventually, he became the commander of Company C of that battalion. Meantime, on 2 December 1965, he received an appointment in the regular army. On 31 March 1966, l LT Lee's company was on duty from 2300 hours until0700 hours, 1 April. They were responsible for providing security for specific locations in the Cholan district I of Saigon. Attached is a copy of the July 1966 Military Journal, an official publication of the MP branch, which outlines the action leading Chester's death and the details of this selection to the National Police Hall of Fame-the first military police officer so honored. In his book, K-9 Soldiers: Vietnam& After, author Paul B. Morgan gives much greater detail on this attack. lLT Lee was posthumously promoted to the rank of captain. In addition, he was awarded the Silver Star for his bravery in this action. l
