Dale Bumpers served his countryproudly at the age of 18 by joiningthe Marine Corps and participating in WWII from1943-46 in the southernPacific as a radio operator. He attained the rank of Sergeantand was honorably discharged. He then attended both the University of Arkansas and Northwestern University law School on
the G.I. Bill
He has served the public from the ground up. First as the Charleston, Arkansas {Franklin county) City Attorney for 18 years, then as Governor of the State of Arkansas for 4 years,and culminating as a United States Senator from Arkansas for 24 years. Almost half a century of working for the people of Arkansas. His service as Governor was highlighted by the complete reorganization of State Government and his pro-active Energy conservation and fiscal conservatism policies. He and his wife, Betty were strong advocates for childhood immunization and he was a strong supporter of the Arkansas Department of VeteransAffairs. He is the only 20th CenturyArkansas Governor to be called"Great" by the Arkansas Political Scientists organization. In the U.S. Senate he was known for his oratorical skills and prodigious respect for the U.S. Constitution. He worked for arms reduction and fiscal responsibility while at the same time supporting our military service personnel. He was a staunch defender of our public lands and alternative energy policies. Following his retirement from the Senate he was Director of the Center for Defense Information. As a Counsel for the Arent Fox Law firm in Washington he promoted Arkansas agriculture and the Medical community by serving as a lobbiest for Riceland Foods and the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences Center. In short, Dale Bumpers has done much to promote quality of life for all Arkansans.
