**Colonel Phillip Alvin Snodgrass, M.D., U.S.
Army Reserve, Retired. Colonel Snodgrass was born on 31
December 1938 in Warren, Arkansas. His family later relocated to Little Rock,
Arkansas, where he graduated from Little Rock Central High School in 1956. He
attended Ouachita College, earning a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 1960,
followed by a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Arkansas College
of Medicine in 1964.
Dr. Snodgrass joined the Army National Guard in
1960 and was appointed Captain in the Medical Corps on 15 November 1965. On 3
January 1966, he began active duty as a Medical Aid Officer with the 188th
Assault Helicopter Company in the Republic of Vietnam. On 9 November 1967,
during an enemy mortar and automatic weapons attack in Dau Tieng, Dr. Snodgrass
sustained wounds but assumed command of medical operations, organizing his
personnel to treat casualties efficiently. He continued to supervise treatment
until all company members were accounted for, declining care for his injuries
until all facilities were secured. For his exemplary actions, he was awarded
the Bronze Star Medal with "V” device and the Purple Heart. He was released
from active duty on 15 October 1968 and returned to reserve status.
Dr. Snodgrass completed his residency at the
University of South Alabama in 1972 and went on to serve various communities
across Arkansas, Alabama, and Mississippi in General Surgery and Emergency
Medicine. As a member of Humanity First, he deployed twice to Haiti following
the 2010 earthquakes. Throughout his 57-year medical career, Dr. Snodgrass
found particular fulfillment serving veterans as a physician with the Central
Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System in North Little Rock during his last 15+
years of practice. He was also called to active duty for service in Panama and
again during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, retiring from the US Army
Reserve with over 30 years of distinguished service.
In addition to the Bronze Star Medal and Purple
Heart, Colonel Snodgrass received the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service
Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal, and numerous other honors and
decorations. Colonel Phillip Snodgrass passed away on 14 September 2022. His
outstanding dedication to medicine and military service exemplifies the highest
standards of a Citizen Soldier.
