Gaylon O'Neil Smith

Major Gaylon O’Neil Smith was an accomplished United States Air Force officer, decorated combat pilot, and respected flight instructor. A native of Russellville, Arkansas, he dedicated his life to flying, teaching, and serving his country with courage, precision, and humility. From a young age, Smith displayed exceptional drive, earning the rank of Eagle Scout, becoming a rated pilot through the Civil Air Patrol, and completing a year of pre-engineering coursework before turning 18. In 1952, at age 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Selected for the prestigious Aviation Cadet Program, he earned his silver wings and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1955. His early assignments took him around the globe, flying B-26 bombers and serving as an Intercept Director at Clark Air Base, Philippines, where his calm, precise decisions during a potential international incident earned him promotion to Captain. Captain Smith was later selected for the elite Fighter Weapons School at Nellis AFB and deployed to Vietnam, flying F-100 Super Sabers and F-4C Phantoms. On over 100 combat missions, he demonstrated heroism and skill, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross for actions under heavy enemy fire, as well as the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters. Following combat, Major Smith became an instructor pilot, mentoring student pilots and refining the Air Force training curriculum. At Webb and Columbus Air Force Bases, he led hundreds of instructor pilots, managed training operations for U.S. and allied aviators, and oversaw a 100,000-hour accident-free flying record. His leadership earned him the Meritorious Service Medal, and his innovations in instruction were adopted across the Air Training Command. Smith retired in 1971 to focus on his family, returning to Arkansas, where he continued his education, earning a B.S. in Mathematics and a B.A. in Art from Arkansas Tech University. He remained active in the Civil Air Patrol, was a charter member of the Russellville chapter, and contributed to his community with the same dedication he had shown in uniform. Major Gaylon O’Neil Smith’s life exemplifies courage, leadership, and unwavering service. From combat missions over Vietnam to shaping the next generation of Air Force aviators, he left a lasting legacy of excellence and honor.
