James "Larry" Nowlin

Command Sergeant Major James "Larry” Nowlin was born in Searcy, Arkansas, in 1948. Raised with strong values and a commitment to service, Larry built two remarkable and parallel careers, one in education, the other in the military, together spanning more than 70 years of dedication to community, state, and country. Larry graduated from public schools in West Memphis before earning a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Mississippi. Committed to lifelong learning, he continued his studies at Arkansas State University, completing graduate and specialist degrees in education. He began his career as a classroom teacher and athletic coach in Earle, Arkansas, and later served as principal. His leadership eventually extended to district administration, culminating as superintendent in Brookland and Riverside School Districts. Throughout his 37-year career in education, Larry was known for prioritizing students, supporting teachers, and upholding strong academic standards. In parallel, Larry enlisted in the Arkansas Army National Guard in 1970. Over 38 years, he rose to Command Sergeant Major—the highest enlisted rank in the U.S. Army, achieved by only a select few. His military service included deployments to the Sinai Peninsula, Kuwait, and Iraq, including combat operations. Known for calm leadership and professionalism, he guided soldiers through complex and dangerous missions. He completed numerous professional development courses, including graduation from the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy, the Army’s premier institution for senior enlisted leaders. CSM Nowlin’s distinguished service earned him multiple awards, including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, an Army Achievement Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge. These honors reflect his courage, dedication to mission success, and unwavering commitment to the welfare of the soldiers he led. A respected mentor and role model, he shaped the careers of countless service members in the Arkansas National Guard. Retiring in 2008, CSM Nowlin left a legacy of excellence in both military service and public education. Whether in the classroom, an administrative office, or a combat zone, he demonstrated integrity, perseverance, and a profound commitment to serving others. His life is a testament to quiet strength, steady leadership, and loyal service.
