James Alfed Harrison

Sergeant James Alfred Harrison was born on January 20, 1919, in Ozark, Arkansas. A proud son of his state and his nation, he served with extraordinary courage and devotion during one of history’s most defining moments—World War II. Sgt. Harrison entered the United States Army on November 8, 1942, and was assigned to Company C, 52nd Armored Infantry Battalion, 9th Armored Division—known as the "Phantom Division.” Trained as an infantryman and halftrack driver, he played a vital role in ensuring the mobility and effectiveness of his unit throughout the European Theater of Operations. His most storied service came during the Battle of the Bulge. On December 16, 1944, as German forces launched a massive surprise offensive through the Ardennes, Sgt. Harrison and his comrades in Task Force Rose were ordered to defend the village of Lullange, Luxembourg. Vastly outnumbered and under relentless attack, they held their ground for two days, delaying the enemy advance long enough for Allied forces to regroup and reinforce Bastogne—an act of valor that proved critical to the eventual Allied victory. On December 18, 1944, Sgt. Harrison’s final radio transmission reported that his position was being overrun. Captured and wounded, he was taken to Stalag IX-A in Germany, where he endured over three months as a prisoner of war before being liberated on March 30, 1945. He returned home later that year and was honorably discharged on November 15, 1945. Sgt. Harrison’s courage and sacrifice earned him numerous decorations, including the Bronze Star Medal for gallantry in action, the Purple Heart with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Prisoner of War Medal, and multiple campaign honors. His unit also received the Presidential Unit Citation and the Belgian Croix de Guerre for extraordinary heroism. After the war, Sgt. Harrison made his home in Houston, Texas, where he served his community as a city foreman until his passing on April 25, 1970.
