Joseph Leon George

Chief Joseph Leon George—known simply as Chief George—is remembered as a quiet hero whose courage at Pearl Harbor saved the lives of six fellow sailors. Though unrecognized during his lifetime, his legacy endures as a powerful testament to duty, sacrifice, and honor. On the morning of December 7, 1941, then–Boatswain’s Mate Second Class George was serving aboard the USS Vestal (AR-4), moored alongside the battleship USS Arizona. When Japanese aircraft attacked Pearl Harbor, the Arizona suffered a catastrophic explosion, killing more than 1,100 men in an instant. Amid fire, smoke, and chaos, George remained on the Vestal’s deck, directing damage control efforts. Through the haze, he spotted six Arizona sailors trapped high on the ship’s burning control tower—cut off from escape and facing certain death. Disobeying an order to cut the Vestal loose, George instead threw a line to the stranded men. One by one, despite severe burns, they pulled themselves across the rope to safety. Of the six rescued, five survived. Among them were Donald Stratton and Lauren Bruner, who later devoted their lives to ensuring George’s heroism would never be forgotten. "We had no way off and were burning alive,” Stratton recalled. "We waved at him, and he threw us a line… We all made it across because of the bravery of the seaman, Joe George.” After the war, George continued to serve honorably, retiring as Chief Boatswain’s Mate. In 1970, he and his wife Thelma settled in Cabot, Arkansas, where he lived quietly until his passing in 1996. Decades later, through the tireless advocacy of the men he saved, the U.S. Navy posthumously awarded Chief George the Bronze Star Medal with "V” Device for Valor. On December 7, 2017—seventy-six years to the day of the attack—Rear Admiral Matthew Carter presented the medal to his daughter, Joe Ann Taylor, aboard the USS Arizona Memorial. Chief George’s heroism was not born of recognition, but of moral courage. In the face of chaos, he chose compassion over command.
