Born on June 18, 1946, Jerry Ashby began his lifetime of service when he joined the United States Navy on December 28, 1964. As an Aviation Electrician’s Mate, he maintained electrical systems on A-1C Attack Aircraft during three tours in Vietnam. His first deployment was aboard the U.S.S. Ranger, followed by service on the U.S.S. Constellation during a tragic period in naval history. While preparing for rest and recovery in the Philippines, his ship was recalled after a devastating fire and explosion aboard the U.S.S. Forrestal, caused by an accidental rocket discharge. Jerry witnessed the destruction firsthand—an experience that would stay with him for life. His third tour took place on the U.S.S. Coral Sea, where he continued to serve his country with distinction until his honorable discharge in 1981. For his faithful service, Jerry received numerous awards, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal (with two devices), Vietnam Service Medal (third award), Navy Unit Commendation (second award), and the Good Conduct Medal (second award). After leaving active duty, Jerry settled in Morrilton, Arkansas, where his servant’s heart flourished. He became deeply involved in his children’s education—as a room father, "super-reader,” lifelong PTA member, and Scout leader. His dedication to community and family was unwavering. In 2009, when tragedy struck with the death of an Arkansas service member outside a recruiting center, Jerry’s mission took a new path. He joined the Patriot Guard Riders, serving on nearly 500 missions, including two years as Arkansas State Vice President and two and a half years as State Captain. He played a vital role in the Arkansas Run for the Fallen, organizing flag lines, mentoring riders, and honoring Gold Star Families across the state. Jerry’s leadership extended to every corner of his community. He founded the Angel Tree Toy Run in Conway County, revitalized the Nathan G. Gordon American Legion Post, and spearheaded countless projects—food distributions for veterans, Memorial and Veterans Day ceremonies, Boys State sponsorships, flag donations, and the Wreaths Across America ceremony at Morrilton’s Elmwood Cemetery. In 2024, Jerry was named Morrilton’s Citizen of the Year, a fitting recognition for a man whose life embodies honor, compassion, and patriotism.
