Captain Virginia Lynn Starzy, United States Navy (retired),
is a second-generation military member from Locust Grove. She earned an
undergraduate degree from Arkansas Tech University in Russellville before
entering the Navy. Subsequently, she earned two master's degrees while on
active duty and then, following retirement, a specialist degree in education
from Arkansas State University.
Her military awards include the Defense Superior Service
Medal, three Meritorious Service Medals, the Joint Service Commendation Medal,
two Navy Commendation Medals, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
Captain Starzy retired after 24 years of active Naval service.
Since retiring from the Navy, Captain Starzy served as the
executive director of the Batesville Area Chamber of Commerce. She then taught
at Southside School District until officially retiring in 2010. Other
activities include serving on the Main Street Batesville Board of Directors for
four years—two of those years as its president—and being a past member of the
Batesville and Southside Kiwanis Club.
She was also a member of the 97th Composite Squadron Civil
Air Patrol located in Batesville for three years. In addition, she was a
mathematics seminar instructor and ACT instructor for Upward Bound students at
Lyon College. Captain Starzy has also served as a director of Vacation Bible
School at her church for five years.
State Senator James Sturch of District 19 remarked that
Captain Starzy continued her service to the community after her Navy career by
becoming involved in various roles, including returning to the classroom and
participating actively in her church.
