First Lieutenant Noel Harris's Distinguished Flying Cross
citation reads:
For heroism while participating in aerial flight, evidenced
by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. First Lieutenant Harris
distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as the
aircraft commander of a helicopter gunship flying in support of friendly ground
forces which were under attack. In an attempt to locate the enemy positions and
draw enemy fire away from friendly elements, he made a mini-gun pass over the
contact area. Despite receiving small arms and machine gunfire, he was unable
to detect the exact source. On his second mini-gun pass, he again faced intense
automatic weapons fire but successfully located the enemy positions.
In an effort to prevent the enemy force from overrunning the
friendly forces, he immediately conducted a rocket run, diving headfirst into
the enemy fire. During this maneuver, he was hit by enemy ground fire and lost
control of the aircraft. First Lieutenant Harris's personal bravery in the face
of the enemy, exemplary professionalism, and complete disregard for his own
safety are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and
reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
