Captain John Yancey of Little Rock, United States Marine
Corps, served in World War II and the Korean War. Captain Yancey's notable
awards include the Navy Crosses, the Bronze Star with "V" for
heroism, and two Purple Hearts received due to injuries sustained in combat.
Due to his actions on Guadalcanal, Corporal Yancey was
awarded the Navy Cross and promoted to Second Lieutenant. After World War II,
he was released from active duty and joined the Marine Corps Reserve unit in
Little Rock. With the onset of the Korean War, John was called back to active
duty for a second combat tour and was awarded his second Navy Cross.
The citation reads as follows:
"For extraordinary heroism in action against the enemy
while serving with the Marine Infantry Battalion in Korea on 27 and 28 November
1950. First Lieutenant Yancey led the second platoon of his infantry company,
defending a high ground north of Hagaru-ri, Korea. On the night of 27th and the
day of 28 November, his company faced a fierce attack by approximately two
enemy battalions. The enemy broke through the third platoon's positions. With
complete disregard for his personal safety, Lieutenant Yancey rushed to the
third platoon's lines amidst heavy enemy fire, fighting hand-to-hand and
encouraging his men. His inspirational leadership halted the enemy
breakthrough. Despite being wounded, he reorganized the third platoon and, upon
discovering that his company commander had been killed, he directed the
reorganization of the entire company. Refusing evacuation despite additional
wounds, Lieutenant Yancey continued to lead and inspire his men through two
more enemy attacks. Only when weakened by blood loss and unable to see due to
his facial wounds did he consider evacuation. His aggressive leadership and
determination in the face of overwhelming odds inspired all around him and were
instrumental in the defense of the company's position. Lieutenant Yancey's display
of outstanding courage and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest
traditions of the United States Naval Service."
