Technical Sergeant Robert Gray Delbert Edward Rogers,
deceased, served in the United States Army during World War II. Some of his
awards include the Distinguished Service Medal for his exceptional service and
duty, the Silver Star for gallantry in action, and the Bronze Star Medal for
exceptionally meritorious combat achievement while serving as a scout with the
Second Squadron, 7th Regiment, officially nicknamed "Gary First Cavalry
Division."
Private Delbert Rogers was awarded the Silver Star for
actions on 29 April 1945 in the Philippine Islands. The narrative reads:
Private Delbert Rogers, California, United States Army, engaged in combat near
the Thousand Island area. On 29 April 1945, Rogers' patrol encountered unknown
numbers of Japanese armed with automatic weapons and rifles. The initial burst
of fire incapacitated several men, forcing Rogers to take cover. Despite the
perilous situation, Private Rogers stood fully exposed with two companions,
providing heavy rifle and grenade fire to repel the enemy, killing three and
causing others to flee. He then assisted in carrying a wounded comrade across
the rice paddy to safety. His bravery and dedication prevented further
casualties and resulted in several enemy deaths.
