Thomas Keith Graves from Harrisburg enlisted in the US Air
Force in 1951 and retired in 1972. Trained as a flight engineer, he was a crew
member on a C123 in 1965 during an emergency resupply mission to the Fifth
Special Forces detachment assigned to a force of South Vietnamese paratroopers,
with Major Norman Schwarzkopf as senior advisor. The camp suffered heavy
casualties and faced low ammunition; the landing strip was declared insecure,
necessitating an aerial drop. Sergeant Graves adapted by preparing a drop gate
from an extra seat belt and assisted in ejecting the necessary ammunition,
helping prevent the enemy from overrunning the camp. He received the
Distinguished Flying Cross for this achievement and was awarded multiple Air
Medals and twice the Air Force Commendation Medal.
