Euine Fay Jones

Faye Jones, deceased, Little Rock. He attended flight school at the Pensacola Naval Flight School, Florida. After commissioning as a pilot, he attended the Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, Texas, training to fly multi-engine aircraft. He was then shipped to the South Pacific Theater of Operations where he was assigned to Navy Unit VSSS. This unit flew missions against Japanese forces from land-based aircraft in the Solomon Islands area.

In 1990, Fay Jones was honored as the "International Kappa Sigma Fraternity Man-of-the-Year." He served for eight years as the faculty advisor for Xi Chapter at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. As a senior architectural student, he designed the major renovation and enlargement of the Chapter House and volunteered to create architectural plans for its remodeling. In 1991, Jones was recognized as one of the "20 Most Important Arkansans of the 20th Century" by the Arkansas Gazette. In 1998, he was named one of the "Ten Most Admired People in Arkansas" by Active Years.

Another significant honor that Fay Jones received posthumously was the naming of the School of Architecture at the University of Arkansas (UA) in his honor on April 4, 2009. His last design (1998), the J. William Fulbright Memorial Peace Fountain, stands between Old Main and Vol Walker Hall, home to the Fay Jones School of Architecture. Close to the fountain is a Historical Marker that describes Fay's contributions to the UA, the state of Arkansas, and to the nation.

Fay Jones' work in architecture inspired many students. His international reputation attracted notable practitioners to lecture and teach on campus, contributing to the school's national reputation for excellence. He designed more than 200 buildings, mostly residences. He is well-known for his chapels, particularly Thorncrown Chapel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Thorncrown Chapel has received numerous accolades and awards since its completion in 1980. In 1981, it received an AIA National Honor Award. In a 1991 national survey conducted by Architectural Record magazine, Thorncrown Chapel was voted the best work of American architecture since 1980. In 2000, the AIA recognized Thorncrown Chapel as the "fourth most significant structure of the twentieth century." In 2006, Thorncrown Chapel was named to the AIA's exclusive list of Twenty-Five Year Award buildings, recognizing one project completed between 25 and 35 years ago that has endured as an embodiment of architectural excellence and significance.

Thorncrown Chapel received the Twenty-Five Year Award the first year it was eligible. It consistently receives honors and recognition, placing 60th on the AIA list of "America's 150 most favorite buildings." Recently, Thorncrown Chapel ranked second on a list of "22 Coolest Places to Get Married in America" and among 12 of the "Most Beautiful Churches in America."
