Lieutenant Colonel Clyde Edward Watson, Army/USAR, Retired – Deceased

Lieutenant Colonel Clyde Edward Watson was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, on 9 July 1950. Diagnosed with leukemia before the age of two, he overcame significant early health challenges. Watson graduated from Fairview High School in Camden, AR, in 1969 and received his degree from Ouachita Baptist University in 1973, where he also commissioned as a Second Lieutenant through the ROTC program.

Commissioned as a Military Intelligence officer, Watson served in the U.S. Army, the Arkansas Army National Guard, and the U.S. Army Reserve. Though eligible to retire in 2001, he continued his service following the events of September 11th, undertaking deployments during Operation Noble Eagle and Operation Iraqi Freedom. During his deployment in Iraq, he was again diagnosed with cancer but completed his orders before returning stateside for treatment, successfully overcoming the illness for a second time. After more than 37 years of military service, he retired in 2007, earning several awards including the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (three awards), and Joint Service Achievement Medal, among others.

From 1996 to 2010, Watson served as an IT Technical Support Specialist for the Arkansas State Police, providing both remote and in-person support to ensure operational efficiency for troopers and staff statewide. Residing in Poyen, AR, for much of his adult life, Watson became actively involved in community initiatives. Notably, he spearheaded the creation of a Veterans Memorial at the local community cemetery, organizing volunteers and fundraising efforts that culminated in its dedication in 2016. The memorial now serves as the site for annual Memorial Day and Wreaths Across America ceremonies, as well as veterans’ funerals.

Lieutenant Colonel Watson dedicated his life to service — to his country, state, and community. He passed away on 18 February 2023 after a third battle with cancer. His funeral was held at the Veterans Memorial he helped establish in Poyen, AR.
